OOC Note: This roleplay takes place AFTER the conclusion of "The boy, the watch and the seal" I just wanted to get started on this one now.
oh, and It's a story-building roleplay, so there will be some as-yet unexplained things, that will make sense later.
Cold, black night hung like a blanket over the castle, smothering light and warmth... All was silent, it was a little after midnight and the castles residents were all asleep, dreaming peacefully of far off lands and peaceful times... Except for one man... Seth lay in his bed that night, his mind in turmoil, his body tossing and turning uncomfortably as he slept... In his mind all was burning...
He was dreaming once again of the slaughter of his people... This dream haunted him often, like a dark omen, he would see Veloria ablaze, and everybody he knew was being killed one by one, hunted down by foes he could barely see... Like the night Seth had lost his mother, but a hundred times worse... This was genocide, the extermination of his race...
Seth tried to fight, but could not, he was just a boy... He was once again the child that had stood and watched his home being attacked, and his mother dieing... He was no longer the great warlock, he was the helpless child... He stood in the street and stared, terrified as the great drakes of his foes swept down and carried off screaming people, he wept as men, women and children alike were slaughtered before him, as though the raiders could not even see him...
Suddenly, he awoke... All was silent in his stone chamber, the dark and quiet were absolute... But the screams, they echoed in his mind... And the flames, they still shone before his eyes... He stared silently at the grey roof above him, it was somehow calming... He was slowly brought back to the castle, the sound of waves gently pushing against the rocks below his window slowly came back, and the screams subsided, the flames died away, and all was normal...
Around the room echoed Seth's slow, heavy breathing as he tried to forget... Now and then came a slight clicking noise as Shadow tended his feathers on his perch near the foot of the bed... Finally Seth decided that going back to sleep would merely bring more dreams, and so he gingerly sat up, he passed his hand over his eyes, feeling cold sweat on his brow, and then ran it through his hair, as if trying to calm himself before he stood...
Now his eyes began to recognize the darkness and grey shapes emerged from it, his bed, Shadows perch, the hearth and his bookcases, as well as the other items around the room... He sighed loudly and Shadow's head jerked from under his wing, the birds head turned quickly and its sharp eyes locked on Seth with a slight squawk, the wizard turned his tired eyes to the Raven and he spoke softly...
I forget sometimes that I do not share this room with just myself, I'm sorry to disturb you Shadow...
As if in answer the bird closed it's eyes gently, and stuck his head under his wing again, leaving Seth to his thoughts. Seth began to pace the room slowly, unable to be at peace while the memory of his dreams still haunted him. The warlock was trying to think of what might help to soothe his thoughts when a slightly larger wave crashed noisily into the cliff outside, drawing the wizard to his square, glass-less window... Seth stood facing the sea, with his eyes closed, listening to the gentle sounds of the docile ocean, a calming sea breeze washed over him, easing his troubles a little...
Another long, quiet sigh escaped his lips, it floated slowly away and was lost amongst the sounds of the sea as another thought entered Seth's mind, like a cloud slowly gliding into view... He turned, opening is eyes and headed for the door, his hand lingered on the doorknob for a few moments, almost as though Seth ad forgotten what he as about to do, but after a few seconds he turned the handle and pushed the oak door open gently, leaving Shadow alone.
Seth walked very slowly that night, as he was in no hurry to get anywhere, and did not wish to make too great a noise... He passed a few rooms without stopping, without even really thinking, as his thoughts were wandering in many directions at once, but nothing was passing through his waking mind as he wandered, now and then a half-memory of his dream would pass through his head, but was forgotten as suddenly as it was remembered, and still he wandered, only his quiet footfalls echoed around him, as no torches lit the corridors this time of night...
All the time he was wandering Seth had been moving slowly in a particular direction, without even realizing it he had been moving towards one particular room, it took him many uneventful minutes to reach it, but once he had, Seth almost knew that this had been his destination all along...
He had come to a simple wooden door, it was deep brown, the same size, shape and color as everybody else's room door, the only difference between the doors was the name carved into them, and it was too dark to see the name on this one, but that did not matter, as the warlock knew who was inside... Seth reached out a hand, and lay it on the handle, but paused... he hesitated, wondering what he could say to justify disturbing the one inside, or, that was what he told himself, deep inside he knew that he had stopped for fear of what may await him on the other side...
After several still and silent moments, Seth withdrew his hand, and took a step down the corridor, away from the room... He turned for a moment, and looked at the door with an expression almost of regret, but then he strode off down the hall at a much faster pace than before, like he wanted to put some distance between himself and the door...
An hour, maybe two, had passed now since Seth had woken, it would have been early in the morning, maybe one or two o'clock, and Seth had wandered far from that spot now, he was steadily climbing a winding staircase, heading for the castles ramparts... He wanted to watch the sea again now, and would maybe stay up there until dawn... It was many months since Seth had watched a sunrise... The winding stairs were cold, and hard under the wizards feet, but he could hear the rumbling of the sea growing louder as he climbed, and knew it would not be long until he could stand silently and watch the waves...
Finally Seth emerged into the cold morning air, it was chill and quiet, broken only by the waves lapping against cliffs now far below him... The wizard paused for a moment in the doorway before walking out onto the castle wall, he let the cold air push over him, there was a wind blowing east, right into Seth's face, sending his hair out behind him like a whitish cloak...
He gazed blankly ahead, expecting to see only the empty walls, and maybe a glimpse of the courtyard where the stone Yarah-Nage still lay, but he was instead greeted by a different sight, he saw Blyclaaf, the great warrior, standing like a great tree on the battlements of the castle, his huge sword sat ready in its sheath slung on the large mans back, and he was leaning forward slightly, as if searching for something on the bleak northern horizon...
Seth, almost in wonder of Bly's daring, walked forward slowly, and spoke calmly:
Hmm... I know my own reasons... But what trouble would keep one such as you from rest so late at night?
There was no answer, it was as though Blyclaaf had not heard him...
Or more, I suppose, this early in the morning...
Seth added, a little louder...
This was enough to get Bly's attention, and the warrior leaped down like one who has been roused from a light sleep, or deep thought, he looked at Seth for a moment, he had half-head what the warlock had said, but still asked him to repeat it, however, just as Seth began to speak, his question became clear in Bly's mind, and the huge man cut him off, asking himself:
Seth! And what would one such as yourself be doing at an hour like this? Surely even you need to sleep...
Seth hesitated for a moment, reluctant to tell all of his story...
Well, if you must know my sleep has been troubled of late... But that is all there is to tell of importance
Blyclaaf stared for a moment at the warlock, who now looked much older than he normally did, before finally speaking:
Worry not about the events of dreams, my friend, for they can do nothing but play out and fade into darkness as the morning light emerges..
Ah, but it is not the dreams that concern me, my large friend, but the doings they elude to... For not all dreams are simply the turnings of a troubled mind... Some herald dark times, and dark doings to come...[/color]
Well Seth, worry not of dark doings to come, you are among people here who would sell their lives to help a friend at any need...
That is indeed so, but it is not my safety that I fear for, nor the health of my friends... These dreams bring dark tidings of deeds yet to be in a land far from here...
With this Seth waited for a few moments, before slowly speaking the words that had been troubling him all night...
My friend... Events are set in motion that concern my homeland... My very people... And they may well draw me away from here... I have spoken of this to no others yet... But I may have to leave the castle... And many things could happen to prevent my return...
Speak not of that nonsense, you will return... what do you wish for me to do during your leave?
I would ask only that you protect those who remain here, as you always have done, friend... And I would ask also that you prevent them from following me, if you could...
By my honour I shall do all that I am able, but for now I must depart, I feel the dawn coming, and I am mighty hungry, by your leave, I shall depart to the dining hall...
And with this, he took a low bow, and departed, leaving Seth to await the dawn... The warlock turned to the north, and rested his elbows against the castles battlements, watching the slowly lightening sky, the first rays of dawn were no piercing the blackness, and red was seeping into it, chasing away the night... The dawn came suddenly and beautifully as the great sun burst from the horizon, setting the sky ablaze and replacing the black of night with the pale light of a new morning, Seth did not feel tired now, and he heard far off the first birds of morning singing in the sun...
